IT News Africa writes about Zimbabwe’s efforts to use digital marketing to expand the country’s tourism sector:
“A partnership between two government ministries in Zimbabwe will attempt to market the Southern African nation as an attractive tourist destination, using the internet as medium.
The Ministry of Information, Technology and Communication, in conjunction with the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality, aim to elevate Zimbabwe’s status to a favorite destination for tourists travelling to the region.
Says Information, Technology and Communication Minister, Nelson Chamisa: “The challenges facing the ICT sector were negatively affecting online marketing of the country’s tourist destinations. We have the Internet but it is slow when other countries have advanced on communication technologies”
Does anyone have thoughts on this? My obeservation is that it will be interesting to see the effectiveness of the campaign, given much of the recent news coming from Zimbabwe.

It’s hard to imagine that a “partnership between two government ministries”, disfunctional and penniless as they probably are, would have any measurable positive impact in the face of such enormous negativity in the worldwide press about Zimbabwe. The civil servants are simply rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic….

Every country has its “nice and bad” yeah indeed a lot of negative news has been emanating from Zimbabwe over the past months I believe since they decided to take back their lands….
But does that mean they do not have the right or opportunity to also make an effort to change things and to survive….. if the west will not help and some African countries will not also help should they not help themselves…..to me this is a good sign, the fact that the ministries are taking action and though may be faced with many challenges are ready to utilize the internet( which offers immerse opportunities in information dissemination).
It’s an acknowledgement that IT can help change, situation. Indeed if Zimbabwe cannot control what comes through BBC and CNN at least it can control (up to a certain extent) what it pushes through the internet.
Am sure should the two ministries take a strong stance on this and get the necessary and correct advice from various professionals in the industry; advertising, communication, ITC, tourism, this can be a very successful project. I believe Zimbabwe like any country is beautiful and has the opportunity to showcase its beauty… lets support this move… if we can.
